10 Reasons to buy Vintage

I posted this two days ago on the Velvet Vintage blog (professional blog). 10 very simple reasons why you should buy vintage. I thought I'd share it on my personal blog :)

10 Reasons to buy Vintage

Girls are always telling us how bad the secondhand stores are in Hanoi, and how they could never even imagine finding wearable vintage pieces in them. We also often hear people asking us, why would I buy old and dirty clothes, when I can get new and clean ones for the same price. With all of the different places us girls can shop for clothes, why should you choose to spend your hard earned cash on clothing that is vintage?
Well the choice is yours, what we do at Velvet Vintage is just inspiring you to go beyond the current fashion, and fashion trends. Be daring! We want to inspire you and help you create your own style, mixing and matching today’s fashion with an old touch!
So why do we love vintage?

Here are 10 simple reasons why we love and buy vintage :
1- Vintage is eco-friendly
It’s good for the environment. Who can argue with that! Buying and wearing vintage clothing is currently one of the hottest ways to recycle. An estimated 1-2 million tones of post-consumer textile waste per year are thrown away and end up in landfill sites. When choosing vintage you are doing your bit to help the earth by discouraging the production of more throw-away fashion.

2- Vintage has History
I love the feeling that vintage clothing has a past life, it makes it mysterious. When you buy a vintage dress, you are not just getting something that already traveled thousands of kms and had several loving owners in their past. It is simply fascinating to wonder who’s life each piece was a part of before it became a part of yours.

3- Vintage is Unique
Have you ever walked into a party and realized you were wearing the same dress as another girl?  I hate this very common social misfortune, I go MAD.  With vintage you are sure you’d never see someone else wearing the same dress. Each item is a “rare” piece of clothing.

4- Vintage is a Source of Inspiration
There’s no better place to borrow than from the classics! Lots of the fashion world’s top designers are influenced by past decades. Some borrow many of their styles straight from vintage pieces. It’s extremely common for a designer to find a vintage dress, make a pattern from it, and sell it as their own. Industry insiders have always been hip to vintage - and for good reason.

5- Quality
We live in a society of mass production. Clothing factories, mostly in 3rd world countries, produce the most in the shortest amount of time possible. Their philosophy is: Quantity over quality. As a good friend always says, “it’s like fast food fashion”. This is not the case with vintage fashions. Back in time, clothing was made with superior expertise. If you examine most vintage pieces you’ll notice greater attention to detail in textiles, patterns, stitching, etc. Vintage fashions were designed to last and were sewn by hand. Why pay so much for cheap quality? Buy vintage.

6- Vintage is an Investment
There will never be more 1950’s wiggle dresses, or 1970’s high waisted bell bottoms jeans made. Because they become harder and harder to find with time they become more valuable as they grow older. It’s basic economics. Vintage is money well spent!

7- Vintage evokes Nostalgia
Why not wear a bit of nostalgia. Playing dress-up is still fun! Create a new character with a unique vintage look right out of the movies, create a dialogue, walk down the street singing in the rain, be seen! You can indulge yourself, be Rita Hayworth or Twiggy, Brigitte Bardot, Jean Seberg or Grace Kelly!

8- Vintage is collectable
As I mentioned earlier, the beauty of vintage clothing is that it’s value is made to last. Unless you are spending a small fortune on Haute Couture, your clothes lose their value the second you take the tag off. How many pieces of new clothing can you buy and expect them to keep their value? Now, yes not every vintage piece is a collectable, but many are. You can spoil yourself sometimes and collect from any designer, style or era.

9- The Shopping experience
When do you get to shop in the same room as Audrey Hepburn, the Beatles, Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe, listening to some of the best old tunes and eating the best cookies in town!

10- Celebrities loves Vintage
They want to stand out of the crowd, make a statement in their own style! Celebrity vintage fans include Dita Von Teese, Kate Moss, Chloe Sevigny, Peaches Geldof, Agyness Deyn, Alexa Chung and Sienna Miller to name a very few!

So, VOILA! Those were a few reasons why vintage clothing is so cool!!
Classic will remain in-style. PERIOD. There is no doubt about that. The fashion world is a vicious circle, it goes around again and again, so everything old becomes new again! Vintage can be worn anywhere, on any occasion, that’s the beauty of Vintage. We like to mix & match new with old, classic with funky. Fashion is made to be fun! Vintage is made to be inspiring! So what are you waiting for…
